How to capture buildings using a single Intentional Camera Movement
Oftentimes I use two movements for buildings but there are times it doesn’t work so well. For example, buildings with brightly framed windows or buildings where on the side of a hill and all the lines are out of whack… disaster! (or it is for me, if you figure something out doing double’s in-camera like this please let me know!)
So, here’s what I do for a building on one ICM.
Follow the shape – following what the world offers again!
You don’t need to go around the whole building because don’t forget if you move the whole frame moves so when you pan upwards, both sides of the building are going up… move across and the top and bottom and everything else is moving across…
Here’s one technique step by step…
Give yourself PLENTY of shutter time… you need to be able to move – pause – move without rushing or you‘ll have a smudged hazy mess.
Set yourself up and do the pan upwards – you don’t need to move far – any movement creates an effect…
Pan up
PAUSE – this is VERY important so the lines are clean and it doesn’t look like a circle –
The pause is the ANGLE
UP – Pause – Across…
Shutter closes…
Remember – slow and steady wins the race.
