Get Started With Intentional Camera Movement Part Four – Animals and Other Irregular Shapes

Congratulations on getting this far I hope you’re having loads of fun so far…

I used to journal after every session when I first started.  It worked so well because I not only remembered then things I would otherwise have forgotten… but I also saw how far I was coming. On days when things didn’t go so well, I’d be less frustrated when I looked back through my journal and saw my notes and the images, I’d stuck in there from that day and saw where I’d got to now… it’s so worth doing…

Okay, so animals and other strange shapes.

You guessed it – let the land lead or follow what the world offers.

You want to make small movements, imagine the camera is a paint brush and just follow the shape…

And don’t forget again… if you pan up the horses’ legs you have just panned up all of them – everything in the frame moves with you…

So I might go up the legs – around the front, make a little wiggly movement around the head – a little wavy line following the contours of the back and around the butt and maybe that’s the shutter closing or maybe I’ll go down a leg…

Slow and steady wins the race…

On the other hand, of course, other things can work.  In this image the horses were moving at pace.  There was no time or possibility of moving around their shape so I did two things – and this is a single exposure there wouldn’t have been time for a second one they were gone in seconds – I made multiple movements at once and I mirrored their movement forward at the same time…

I often tap into the energy and match it.  High energy jerky movements by the horses – matched by high energy jerky movements by me… I’ve found over the years that this often works so well, literally following what is offered, mirroring and synchronising with it…
