High pass filters grab hold of the sharpness already in the image and sharpen it… Imagine you’ve got a picture of a street in the City, it’ll grab all the edges of the buildings and any other shape edges and sharpen them but leave the rest… Whereas a smart sharpen sharpens everything.
I love to use a high pass filter when I’ve finished a composite or when I’m editing ICM – I want to create some cohesion and some clarity in the shape and form that is there for the mind of the viewer to grab onto, to anchor to…but I don’t want to sharpen everything…
The important thing to know about the high pass is this – it’s on a layer of it’s own. Because you sharpen the edges with the mask and then blend this new layer with it’s sharpened edges to the rest of the layer stack below…
